13th Annual Floating Lantern Ceremony - Memorial Day 2011

The Floating Lantern Ceremony, also known as the Toro Nagashi ceremony, was founded by the Shinnyo-en Buddhist order in Japan.  During the ceremony, people release small lanterns inscribed with messages to loved ones who have passed away and prayers for a peaceful future.  Though the ceremony is traditionally held during the latter part of summer in Japan, Hawaii's Shinnyo-en order holds the ceremony on Memorial Day to help honor those that have lost their lives in war.  This year's ceremony will include muscial performances as well as a moment of reflection for Japan’s tsunami and earthquake victims. Lahaina Noon is today!  What's Lahaina Noon?  It's a phenomena that only happens in the tropics - and Hawaii is the only state in the nation where it occurs.  During Lahaina Noon, the sun is directly overhead at high noon so objects standing straight up (like parking meters) do not have a shadow.  See below for exact times across the state!

Spot's Inn is Back!

I could barely contain my excitement when I saw the Spot's Inn sign in Puck's Alley.  Originally located in Kalihi, Spot's was one of our favorite plate lunch spots, so we were really sad when they closed a few years ago.  Imagine my excitement to find out that they had reopened in a new location.  Be sure to check it out!  Their food is super ono and their prices are great.  Definitely a favorite!  Happy Eating!
